THE JOHN LLOYD-WILLIAMS MT ELIZA CRICKET ACADEMY

The Academy was established in 2022, after the passing of Mt Eliza Cricket Club Life Member, and 1st X1 Team Manager, John Lloyd-Williams. John’s sister Sue approached the club with the Academy concept, and in an act of extreme generosity, pledged to provide funding of $10,000 per year to the academy (Annually adjusted in line with CPI), for a period of 20 years. The Academy commenced providing cricket programs in 2023.

Pictured here is Sue Lloyd-Williams, with her brother John ‘Postie’ Lloyd-Williams celebrating his 70th birthday. Postie was a much loved member of the club, and whilst he will be dearly missed by all at the club, his name will live on through its ongoing association with the academy.

ACADEMY PROGRAMS

Whilst programs can be adapted to suit the needs of the club and the community at any given time, it is expected that all programs would closely fit the description of at least one of the program pillars.

PROMOTE & ATTRACT

Promote the sport of cricket to potential junior participants in our local area to help the club maximise its participation rate in male and female junior cricket.

EDUCATE & DEVELOP

Implement programs to increase the level of skill, knowledge and enjoyment amongst junior coaches and junior players, to generate a high level of ongoing player development.

CREATE PATHWAYS

Implement programs that create clear player pathways to Mt Eliza senior cricket and Premier Cricket.

SEASON 2026/27 ACADEMY ACTIVITIES

During the 2026/27 season the Academy will fund multiple programs, aimed at boys and girls in all junior age levels within the club, and with the purpose of increasing player skill development and enjoyment of the game.

EMERGING PLAYER PROGRAM

During August 2026 the Academy funded an emerging player program which was aimed at the next level of juniors that had not yet experienced representative cricket for the MPCA. Across 5 indoor sessions at Frankston Indoor Sports, over 20 hand selected Mt Eliza Juniors got to work with expert coaches to improve their techniques and cricket skills. These sessions are also geared towards improving player mindset and confidence and identify potential new on field leaders for the future.

ONE ON ONE COACHING

Our Academy Head Coach is Sahan Wijeratne (Wiji) and he has been working with the club and the academy for the past 3 seasons. The Academy funds one on one coaching sessions for our under 16 and under 14 boys and girls which takes place for 2 hours every Saturday morning in the nets at Mt Eliza.

Wiji is the head of cricket at Elite Cricket Mentoring, is a Level 3 cricket coach, a Certificate 3 sports coach, and has obtained a certificate in sports psychology. As a young player in Sri Lanka he Captained the national Under 17 and under 19 teams.

Wiji loves working with young aspiring cricketers and has helped produce cricketers that have gone on to play County Cricket in England, Premier Cricket in Australia, and he also works with some current international players. Wiji brings an enormous amount of coaching knowledge and experience to our club and we are already seeing the benefits as a result of his coaching.

SCHOOL HOLIDAYS CLINIC

During January 2027 the Academy will also fully fund a School Holiday Cricket Program aimed at our under 12 and under 10 boys and girls. The clinic will take place across 2 days of the school holidays at Emil Madsen Reserve where our kids will take part in a series of games and drills designed to improve skills and have a lot of fun.

ACADEMY ELITE

At the end of the cricket season, and as part of the junior presentations, the Academy will provide  6 sporting equipment vouchers valued at $2o0 each, which will be issued to junior players deemed by the coaches to be our hardest working players at training.
